Adventures in Haymarsh

High Density Grazing

It’s that time of the year where we start the high density grazing.  Today, Andrew and the boys moved the electric wire so that the herd can continue to clean up the hay fence before we move them home.

Egg collecting crew.
Piano duet.
When the big boys are in school these two become the best of friends 🥰
Joy😄
Moving the wire from the grazed ditch to the hay fence on Thursday.

Seedlings, Goose eggs, & Wildflowers

The seedlings are coming along.
Andrew went to check on a heifer and as he was going through the gate he saw a goose egg in the field. Are you able to differentiate the goose egg, from the duck egg, from the chicken egg? 🥚
Wildflowers project 🦋
A nice little poem in a Bull Catalog.

Windy 🌬️

The relentless wind we’re experiencing is exhausting.  It probably doesn’t help that my morning started with an emotional funeral of our farm insurance agent who lost his battle to a terminal illness.  He was 4 years older than me.  He was surrounded by family praying the Rosary and he left this world on the 4th Glorious mystery, he wrote two letters to his 11 year old and 7 year old sons to be opened at certain milestones of their life.  Over 400 hundred people attended the funeral, that’s half the town of Glen Ullin.  Makes one ponder one’s own final days.

A beautiful quote in one of my Well Read Moms members’ home.
I was pampered with a Baby Shower…

“Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.” — Tennessee Williams
“They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” — Carl W. Buechner
“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you; spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.” — Amy Poehler
“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” — Audrey Hepburn
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched — they must be felt with the heart.” — Helen Keller

Winter Wonderland🌨️

Whomever is saying prayers for us to have moisture, it’s working! Hopefully this is enough to get the blansa clover to germinate once it melts.  This will definitely help settle the dust, and helps take away the threat of prairie fires.

We’re working heifers today. I’m a fairweather worker, Andrew is not, he’s not going to let a couple of inches of snow slow him down 😅
3 nice fellows came down to help.
All done & heading back out to their pasture.
We’re jumping the gun a bit, but we’re preparing some baskets to be given out to those who won’t have baskets or be dying eggs.
Our official 🥚 decorator🌸🐰💜

Planting🌱

Andrew, Grandpa Bob, Simon and Ambrose are planting the field with a broadcaster today.

Mixing the blansa clover and wheat together. Now we just need moisture so it will germinate.
We picked up some strawberries from the fruit truck and made some strawberry jam. 🍓
Jen helped make the jam.🍓

Twinkle ✨

The boys made their first pony sale.  Twinkle has a new home.  Beth is an excellent horse trainer and has a 5-year-old daughter and a three year old son that are so excited for their new pony!  We couldn’t ask for a better home for Twinkle.

Saying Goodbye to Twinkle, but since Beth helps us move cattle, I have a feeling we might see Twinkle again.
Twinkle ✨ is going to a great new home.
The new owners 💜💙💛
Shipping out the 2nd round of yearlings.
We’re blessed to know such great stockmen/women!

Fieldwork

Andrew is out harrowing the field prepping the ground for some drought tolerant clover he’s going to plant.  As you can see by the dust, we could use prayers for adequate rain.

“The farmer has to be an optimist or he wouldn’t still be a farmer.” — Will Rogers
Meanwhile, they’re giving their car a good wash.
Saturday morning chores, it’s supposed to get up to 61 degrees today.
We ate supper out on the porch on March 13th, that’s got to be some sort of record. It was nice of my cousin to come help us set up the corral to sell another round of yearlings.
