Adventures in Haymarsh

Longest Day of the Year

This day is usually bittersweet for me… In the midst of enjoying the long sunny days I can’t help but want to start preparing for the winter that’s coming. Soon we’ll start putting up hay and other activities that in the end really are a preparation for winter. It was misty most of the day, but the sun came through in the afternoon and it really is a gorgeous evening.

Happy Summer Solstice!

Early Morning Move

A neighbor’s bull was jumping into our heifers’ pasture. Typically we have them in a different pasture but due to all of the wind towers going up things have shifted this year. So, we spent this morning moving the heifers to a different pasture.

The last load to leave the pasture. Typically we trail them with horses but with all the young crops we thought it best to trailer them this time.

4-H & the Fair

Starting discussion of Morton County Fair happening August 1-4 at the New Salem Fair Grounds.

Preparing for his poultry exhibit.
Sheep trimming demonstration.
Grandpa finishing up the last four acres of corn planting.
Leveling out the driveway continues…
One of those “stylized” photos my phone makes for me.
Watching the pro
So proud of his poullet.

Fresh Scoria

Grandpa Gietzen surprised us by providing some fresh red scoria. He noticed that we were struggling with mud when it rained. He had a friend that knew a fella who has some good scoria. He did ok it with Andrew first. He had the road flattened out for us when we got home last night. The red looks so pretty against the green grass.

Andrew flattening out the last load that was brought this morning.

Taste of Heaven!

The boys are helping me wrap up the garden planting… The weather is heavenly, praising God (& Andrew) that I’m able to be with my boys… truly a gorgeous day! We just planted Daddy’s crimson red rhubarb, and now we’re planting wax beans and Bush beans.

Cluck & Chicks

One of our hens set & had six baby chicks!

The mother hen!
This pheasant decided to sit right outside our window.
On a side note…Thanks for the coffee cups Little Blue Stems! Andrew and I love drinking out of them. Something about them just makes them so fun to drink out of! I don’t know if it’s the weight of them, or the shape, but they’re really great coffee cups!
