Potatoes, Corn, Trees, Pumpkins, Garden & Halter Training

All in a days work.  Another very full, but good Saturday!

Grandpa, Andrew, and Lucas put the cultivator on the 70.
Clean potatoes and trees! Grandpa is sure handy with that cultivator! Simon, Isabel, and Ambrose did the majority of the hoeing to clean the potatoes.
Meeting of the minds.
Helping clean the garden… While enjoying a popsicle.
Daddy was able to swing over and help us for a little while! Then he was off to check on the heifers, and work on some fence. He did get a chance to plant some sunflowers, and hoe a row of corn…sounds like he enjoyed that quite a bit!
The pumpkins and squash are sure liking this moisture and warm weather.
This is before the sweet corn rows were hoed but after they were cultivated. It may be knee high by the 4th of July!
Today we planted two types of lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and some more carrots. That should round off the garden for this season, except that I would like to plant some beets. Simon also planted some colorful corn.
Simon has been working on halter training his colt, “Rocket.”
There are some flowers on the strawberries!
The garden after today’s work! It looks so much better, so many weeds were pulled.

Goslings

Grandpa’s goslings have arrived!

The price of goslings has risen, they are a little under $20 each.
They “chatter”, so cute☺️
Watering plants for Mommy.
Grandpa and grandchildren addressing the weeds in the potatoes.
I rototilled while they hoed, many hands make light work.
Taking care of some noxious weeds by a ditch close to one of our pastures.
Strong winds blew down a section of our fence by the herd. There was a cow on the wrong side so my Dad asked me to check to see if I could find the leak…the children thought it was hilarious when I said I think I found where she may have gotten through.
Cleaning out the seeder.
All six helped load this fallen down fence! Even Mary carried kindling.
Andrew found this cactus in the

pasture.

Well Issues

We went to check on the heifers on Sunday and found out that the well is not working… We did two quick emergency runs of water to them and moved a tank over from a different pasture.

Much happier heifers.

Corpus Christi

Thank you for the pictures Catherine.  Each time we get to be in this little country church, we feel blessed.  There’s been a Corpus Christi procession since I was a young girl, the prayers are so powerful and we as a community feel blessed to be able to gather together and participate in this tradition.

Predators

There are few things that make me want to become an Annie Oakley and work on my marksmanship skills more than going out and finding that the coyotes have gotten a calf. Heartbreaking. Nature can be so cruel.

Colt!

Simon’s registered Shetland pony, Jet, had a male foal this morning!  The children were so excited they had to run out in their pajamas to see!

Elgin Days: our first parade of the season.
The Little Bluestems played.
The groupies 😊
It was a cooker! Shade and a cool treat by the “Line Camp” were much appreciated. The cousins were busy supplying the entertainment and the cold treats.

🍦

Our little petunia…she appears to enjoy socializing.💖
While the women and children were out gallivanting and having fun the men folk sweated and toiled through the heat of the day preparing and setting a uke tire for a cow tank.

Farm Camp

These two must have grit.  They chose to come back a second year to help!😀💙💜💪

My nephew and Godson helping tear down a fence.
She’s such great help with the children!

Hot 🔥

It’s 92 degrees right now and the weather report says 100 tomorrow.  Andrew got a pool for the little ones, the big children are good sports and are having fun in it too…won’t be long before they won’t fit though.  After a morning and early afternoon of mowing the yard, weeding, watering plants, collecting the flags from Memorial Day and tagging calves, the kids are sure enjoying some R &R.

The oak trees from acorns that Andrew and Simon collected from MN a few years ago are alive and growing. Soon we’ll have to transplant them.
Andrew reseeded a part of a field before work this morning. I always knew he’d be outstanding in his field. Here he’s adjusting the rate of the seeder.
This is one of the most beautiful sights for us! Our oldest has been praying for this cow for the last couple weeks. She had a prolapse in March and we had to take her to the vet to get stitched up, we knew we had to watch her close, at 6:30 this morning Andrew and Simon when doing chores noticed that she was starting to labor. So, they roped her and removed the stitches and to our great happiness had a big, healthy, red bull calf.
First day of baseball practice! ⚾
